My wife took me on a Friday night date to downtown Denver where we experienced artist Nick Cave’s HEARD•DAM. HEARD•DAM was performed outdoors at the Denver Civic Center Cultural Complex. Cave creates Soundsuits, and in particular for this performance, horse Soundsuits. Local dancers donned the sound-generating suits (made from raffia and weighing up to 50 pounds each) in pairs and performed to live music written for the performance. The event was part of the City of Denver’s Biennial of the Americas celebration and in connection with Cave’s exhibition at the Denver Art Museum (DAM).
I’m often skeptical when my artist wife wants to introduce me to art that stretches my comfort zone and I was skeptical about this event. As usual, my wife was right and I’m thankful that we attended the event. HEARD•DAM was a feast for the eyes, ears and heart. The crowd exuded joy evidenced by smiles, laughter, and applause at what turned out to be an interactive performance. This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime events that lifts a person from the mundane to experience the best of human creativity.
The pictures fall short of conveying the actual experience but are representative of the visual feast and joy we experienced.
